Located to the southwest of Xinjiang
Uyghur
Autonomous region, on the west rim of the Taklamakan
desert, the north of the
Karakurum
mountain and the middle reaches of the
Zerepshan river.
Origin
Originated from the Hunting age of the Remote
Antiquity, prospered from the 2nd to 16th century
A.D., it belonged to ancient
"Yarkent" State.
Before liberation, Mekit county was under the
jurisdiction of Maralbishi county，
in 1922, with the approval of the Maralbishi
county authorities，
Mekit county was formally founded and the
name was used ever since.
Administrative Division
It has jurisdiction over 10 villages, 4 farms, 132
rural residents' committees and 7 urban residents'
committees.The 43rd, 45th, and 46th regiments of the Xinjiang
Production and Construction Corp and the managing
center of the Forward
reservoir are within the county.
Population and Territory
By the end of 2003, in its total area of
10,276.6 square kilometers the population totaled
173,058, among which the non-agriculture population
was 34,858, taking 20.14 percent of the total.
Natural Characteristics
Located on the Zerepshan
river plain area, the soil is fertile with deep and
rich soil layer. There are arable land of 531,850 mou.
The mean temperature of the air is 22.4℃, the annual
accumulated temperature is 4550 hours and the
non-frost period is 214 days.
Natural Resources
Agricultural products is abundant. The major crops
are wheat and corn. The
major economic crops are cotton, garlic, spring
onion, and fennel.
There are various fruits and melons all the year
round, the major ones are watermelon, pear, apricot,
plum, peach, grape, chinese date, pomegranate, etc.,
the featured
products are wild mushroom, Doran sheep, licorice,
sand bramble, matrimony vine, safflower, etc..
It has been long renowned for its names as "County
of Dolan Dancing",
"County of Farmer Painting","County
of Dolan Sheep",
"County of Cotton", and "County of Melons and
Fruits".

In 2003, GDP of the county amounted to
550,830,000 Yuan RMB, the agriculture production
value totaled 792,450,000 Yuan RMB.
among them the industry production value totaled
66,900,000 Yuan RMB, agriculture production value
totaled 725,570,000 Yuan RMB.
The per capita income of urban residents was 12,488
Yuan RMB, the per capita net income of farmers was
1,960 Yuan RMB.

66,880,000 Yuan RMB, the basic agricultural
production and marketing network

husbandry and fishery amounted to

The total grain output was 106,000 tons.

Traffic is easy and quick, c-level asphalt highway
amounted to 184 kilometers. There are 13,812 SPC telephone customers, 6.6 for
every hundred persons, all of which can enjoy the

Rural and Urban Construction
The ongoing city construction is ever
increasing. By the end of 2003, the newly built
urban area was 130,000 square meters,
the living condition of the urban citizens
had been greatly improved and the average urban
resident had a housing area of 21.7
square meters and the average rural resident had a
housing area of 16.58 square meters.
Water Conservancy and Electric Power
There are 2 major rivers with average annual flow
amount of 750,000,000 cubic feet;
2 reservoirs, 2 regional reservoirs with
capacity of 121,000,000 cubic feet;
4,656 meters of canals and 300 motor-pumped
wells which can provide more than 100,000,000 cubic
feet water for irrigation.
Power lines spread densely, charges are the same in
both countryside and cities.
Culture and Education
There is one performance group, one culture centre
and one public library. Broadcasting, TV, and cabled TV
population amounted to 97.6%, 96.3%,
and 98% respectively.There are 2 senior high school with 1,210 students,
20 high school with 13,811 students and 82 primary
school with 27,860 students .
99.8% school age children go to primary school,
13.6% junior high school students go up to senior
high schools.
Athletics and Hygiene
Four counties was granted "County of Ethnic Folk
Art" by the Ministry of Culture of PRC and Cultural
Bureau of Xinjiang because
of their rich ethnic culture and sports.
The county has 14 medical institutions with 403
medical workers, among them:
12 are hospitals and clinics, one is epidemic
prevention station and one is health centre for
women and children. Every
ten thousands people have 24 doctors and 25 hospital
beds.
Popularity of Science and Technology
There are 3,451 technicians of all levels, 34
and 738 have got advanced and middle-level

The air quality is good, the surface water
quality attains class B, and the green belt is
68,000 square metersv.
In 2003, 59,000 mou grass
land was returned for farming, forestry and animal
husbandry, 2,149,000 Yuan RMB was invested
in improving the grassland of 48,000 mou
and forest of 504,000 mou.
Social Welfare and Social Security
There is 1 welfare hospital with 145 hospital beds
in it.
Social security system for urban vulnerable groups
have been built up in an all-around-way,
14,486 urban residents have received the minimum of
subsistence fee, taking 51% of the total population.
The insurance business have had 50 kinds of life and
property insurance items, and received insurance
premium of 15,900,000 Yuan
RMB and made reparation payment of 7,270,000 Yuan
RMB.
Featured Products
Featured products are sweet melon, small fennel,
garlic, wild mushroom, licorice, sea buckthorn
medullar and safflower.In October 2002, the sweet melon passed the
examination and KSH016 authentification (2003) of
the Agricultural Bureau of Xinjiang Province.
In 2003, the planting area of nuisanceless sweet
melon was 10,000 mou with
a total output of 19,370 tons, among which 15,500
tons were
transported and saled to most cities like Xinjiang,
Guangzhou, Shang Hai and so on and enjoy a highly
reputation among consumers
for its excellent quality and delicious taste.
In 1998, the "Breeding and Improving of Dolan
sheep" project had been listed as one of key
research problems of the ninth
five-year-plan of Xinjiang Autonomous Region and Dolan
brand was registered in 1999.
The Mekit wild mushroom is called " black pearl" of
the desert and enjoy a reputation of prolonging
life, decreasing blood-fat,
and combating cancer, containing 16 amino
acid which human need such as alanine. In 1999, the
Mekit wild mushroom was registered by the national
Brand Bureau.
Economic crops such as fennel and garlic have take a
scale.In 2003, the planting area of fennel was 90,000 mou
with a total production of 1,400 tons.
Natural Landscape and Human Landscape
The county has been long known as "County of
Duoliang Dancing", "County of Farmer's Painting",
"County of Cotton" and
"County of Fruits and Melons".
12 Muqam divertimento (known as "Mother of
Uyghur
Dancing and music") expert Amannisahan
was born here. Farmer's painting have
been on-the-show and awarded once and again
home and abroad.
The nearest point of the Kumkusar village, which
enjoys a rich desert tour resources, folk arts and
customs is only 13
kilometers away from Taklamakan
desert.
In 1993, the Chinese and English consociation
expeditionary team entered the Taklamakan
desert through the
