Location
Located to the southwest of Xinjiang, north of
Kunlun mountain, south of Pamir Plataeu and the
middle and upper reaches
of the Yarkent runoff
fan plain of Taklamakan
desert and Bugli desert.
It borders Poskarn county, Kagilik county to the
south, Yengisar and to the west, Mekit to the east,
Shule and Yopurga to the
northwest and Tashkurgan to the southwest.
Origin
It has a history of more than 2000 years.
In history it had become Yarkent
kingdom, Qusha kingdom and Yerqiang kingdom.From 1943-1956 it was the site of
Yarkent prefecture. In 1956
Yarkent couty was
established under the charge of Kashgar
prefecture.
Administrative Division
It has jurisdiction over 7 villages, 7 towns, 22
townships, 498 administration village, and 19
communities.
Population and Territory
By the end of 2003, in its total area of
8,195.69 square kilometers the population totaled
644,300, among which the non-agriculture
population was 148,888, taking 23.1 percent of the
total.
Natural Characteristics
located to the delta plain of the upper stream
district of Zerepshan
river, the lands is tilted to one side towards
east from the west.
The total length is 190 kilometers from south to
north and 56 kilometers from east to west.
Average elevation is 1,231.2 meters, mountainous
area is 39.18%, plain 60.82%, arable area 1,260,000
mou . The climate belongs to the warm continental
temperate zone with clear-cut seasons, dry weather,
long sunlit period and large
evaporation.
The annual frost-free season is 220 days or so, the
average mean temperature of the air is 12.3 ℃s,
accumulated sunshine
period are 2,965 hours, the annual precipitation is
56.6mm, frost-free period 192 days.There
is a great difference in temperature between day and night, thus, can well meet 2 or 3 cuttings of farm
crops' need for heat,
providing a unprecedented natural environment for
cotton, wheat, corn, maize, almond, rose, melon,
pomegranate, grape and apricot to grow.
Natural Resources
Agricultural products are abundant, the major
ones are cotton, almond, Persian walnut, livestock,
fowl etc.. Here has the biggest almond
base around China.
Water resources is abundant,
Zerepshan river and Tiznap
river run through the county, the total amount of
water resources is
1,800,000,000 cubic feet, among them, the runoff of
the earth's surface amounts to
1,500,000,000 cubic feet, the underground
water totals 290,000,000 cubic feet,
There are abundant mineral resources such as
coal, sand gold, steel, iron, lead, zinc, gypsum,
sulphur, mica, limestone, crystal
stone, green jade.etc. in south mountain area, and
15 medical ingredients such as licorice, dangshen
, herba ephedrae etc.
There are also a great varity of wildlife such as
snow chicken, fox, wild pig, wolf, dzeren,
sturgeon, yellow sheep, leopard, hare etc..

The total output value was 1,261,000,000 Yuan
RMB, among which total industrial production value
was 256,999,999 Yuan RMB in 2003,
, agriculture total production value was
1,500,000,000 Yuan RMB, and the net income of
farmers is 1,549 Yuan RMB.
Industry
The county has more than 1,300 industrial
enterprises, 10 of which are of above-scale.
The basic industrial network dominated by cotton
spinning, electric power, building materials,
smeltting, agriculture by-product
processing have been established.
Agriculture
In 2003, the grain gross output amounts to
348,800 tons, edible oil 800 tons, cotton 50,500
tons;
Domestic animals on hand for sale was 1,205,600,
meat 28,700 tons, economic forest 320,000 mou.
It was listed among the national almond merchandise
base and provincial commodity
cotton base. "Yarkent"
cotton was granted the 1st prize among the famous
cottons in China and "Yarkent"
rice was granted the

In recent years, 8,360 greenhouses have been set up,

up 25,000 greenhouse so as to
make Yarkent county the largest vegetable producing

the county. By the end of 2003, every hundred square
kilometers had public road 2.9 kilometers.

which can enjoy optical fiber communication; the
computer customer reached 1,115,
the mobile telephone customer attained 21,186, every
hundred persons had 4.3 telephones.
Urban and Rural Construction
City construction is ever increasing.The rebuilding city area is 4 square meters, and the
newly built area is 9 square meters.

reservoirs of middle and small size and 6 hydropower
stations with annual generated electricity

There are 28 township-level houses of culture,
28 public libraries, 462 village-level houses of
culture, one television station,
one broadcasting station, and one art troupe with
annual performance of 270 times. The coverage rate
of radio and TV is 100% and 99%.
There are 286 schools with 165,284 students in
school.The rate of school age children's entry into primary

The enrollment rate of high school student is 89.2%,
