location
Located to the west of Kashgar Prefecture,
Xinjiang Uyghur
Autonomous Region, southeast of the Taklamakan
desert. Maralbishi county is to the east, Yarkent
county to the southwest, shule and Yengisar county
to the southwest, Peyziwat
county to the north.
Origin
It was under the jurisdiction of "Shule" state in
Han Dynasty, Shule superintendent's office in Tang
Dynasty, Kalahan kingdom in Song Dynasty and West
Liao. In April 1940, "Shule" autonomous bureau was
established with "Shule" county' proposal.
In April 1943, it was upgraded to county.
Administrative Division
It has jurisdiction over 7 villages, 2 towns, 5
state-owned farms, 92 administrative villages, 4
city residents' committee.
Population and Territory
By the end of 2003, in its territory of 3,300 square
kilometers the population totaled 137,000, among
which the non-agricultural population was 17,356,
taking 12 percent of the total.
Natural Characteristics
Located on the rim of the Taklamakan
desert, the dry land takes 99.4%, the water areas
takes 0.6%, having arable land 320,000
mou.
Its climate belongs to the dry continental temperate
zone, the annual mean temperature of the air is
12.4℃, the annual
amount of precipitation is 48 mm, the accumulated
temperature is 4550 hours and the non-frost period
is 232 days.
Natural Resources
Agricultural products is abundant. It has got the
fame of "Home of
Quality Sweet Mellon" and "Home of High Yielding
Cotton". Major crops are wheat, corn, cotton,
fennel, sunflower, and the major fruits and melons
are sweet melon, apricot, grapes, pomegranate, and
fig.
It is the national high-quality cotton base.
There are more than 430 exploitable traditional
Chinese medicine ingredients, such as liquorices
matrimony vine, herbal ephedrine, and medullar.

In 2003, GDP of the county amounted to
399,000,000 Yuan RMB, the agricultural and
industrial production value totaled
384,000,000 Yuan
RMB.
Among them the industry production value totaled
49,000,000 Yuan RMB, agriculture production value
totaled 334,000,000 Yuan RMB the per capita net
income of farmers is 1,544 Yuan RMB.

the industry network was initially established
dominated by
cotton-processing, domesticated animal products deep
processing, edible oil refinery.

workers. Every ten thousand people have 0.11 doctor
