People'S Square |
Kashgar
People's Square is located in the center of the
city. connecting the East Renmin Road and
neighboring on the people park in the south,
with land coverage of 12 hectare. It is the only
square with the statue of late Chairman Mao
Zedong as its central structure in Xinjiang and
also a rarity of its kind in China. The square
has become a cultural square with
multi-functions integrating political gathering.

The square was built in 1952. witnessing three
major enlargements and reforms in history, of
which the one carried out in 1997 is the biggest
in scale. It takes the standing statue
(completed ill 1959, 12.26 meters in height for
statue, 11.74 meters in height for its pedestal
and 24 meters ill total height) as its
commanding height and central point. Behind tile
statue stands a gigantic a screen wall as a
poetry tablet inlaid with white marble with
measurement of 10 meters in height and 62 meters
in width, the middle of which is engraved with
late Chairman Mao's poem in his gilded script
Snow to the tune of Spring Beaming in Garden in
both impressive and momentous air, flanked by
Uygur version of this poem and brief
introduction to the square in both the east and
west. Below the statue are two viewing stands
and a rostrum with floor space of 2500 square
meters, holding 3000 people, with 18-meter-high
stainless steel masts on the both sides. The
rostrum is ingenious in conception, open in
structure and unique in appearance, with charm
of modern structure.
Across the 60-meter-wide East Renmin Road stands
a main electroplated mast with the height of
30.3 meters in the center of the square flanked
by 8meter-high symmetrical white marble
ornamental columns, which are pure white,
solemn, elegant and sacred. The central area of
the square has been completely paved, of which
concrete paved is 11000 square meters, granite
is 2800 square meters and sidewalk paved with
color brick is 4300 square meters. The wide
green belt has been built on the east, west and
south sides, covering a land area of 7500 square
meters, inside which trees and grass are green
and lush, thus forming an ideal climate zone
full of vigor and blending with the people's
park. The southern end of the square are three
color-lighted fountain matched with rhythmic
music, connecting one another, with a total
length of 150 meters and total area of 2300
square meters. There are eight arched bridges
which span over the three pools, like eight
dragons crouching on the water in romantic and
splendid posture. On the both sides of the
square stands one high-pole lamp with 25 meters
and also 60 clusters of colored lamps. Every
night, the square is illuminated with various
lights, whose brilliance is shining one another.
Accompanied by pleasant music, the fountain
shone by color undulates, changing so
unpredictably that one even forgets to part with
this charming sight.
The people's square fully embodies Kashgar's
local style and Chinese peoples' traditional
cultural feature, integrating bold. dignified.
decorative and greening functions, with both
antique flavor of classical architecture and
novel modern architectural style, enjoying
reputation among northwestern China's urban
squares, the square, a showcase of heroic spirit
in the united struggle waged by different
nationalities, has become one of the scenic
spots for Chinese and foreign tourists. Now. il
has been ranked among the education bases for
patriotism.
