Kashi, as a national level historical and
cultural famous city, draw thousands of tourists
from home and abroad to come each year with its
unique folk customs and historical relics. In
the markets of central Asia and West Asia,
Adilis silk from Kashi is a special attraction.
Adilis silk with its startling colors, and
beautiful patterns, is a unique local specialty
and cloth favored by local Uyghur women for
making clothing, scarves and handkerchiefs.
There are four major colors black, red, yellow,
and green integrating other colors to show the
patterns on it. Its bright color is in great
comparison with that of the surrounding
environment (the rim of the desert), which shows
Uyghurs'
love
for life and pursuit for the future.
Adilis silk means the silk which is made from
stained method. Traditional Adilis silk is woven
out of loom. The loom is about 1.5 meters high.
While operating the machine, artisans use both
their hands and feet. Skillful craftsmen bound
the silk threads together with maize peel in
according to the demand of different pattern,
soak it in the dye made of mineral and plants,
then weave it.
The common patterns are almond flowers, the
veins of planks and the pattern of combs, which
looks like brightly-colored clouds. Hotan and
Kashi Adilis silk are most famous.
Hotan silk is known for its simple,
proper, changeable and untrammeled patterns,
while Kashi Adilis silk is renowned for its
bright colors (jade green, sapphire blue, and
pink) and delicate
patterns.
In the rural area of Kashi prefecture, almost
every family has looms. Girls who can weave
Adilis silk can get more betrothal gifts. A
Uyghur girl said," We like to wear clothing made
of Adilis silk." In holidays or festivals, many
Uyghur women in Adilis silk can be seen in the
streets and lanes in Kashi. It is said that the
beautiful color and patterns will bring one good
mood.
