People in Kashi
city are composed of people of various
nationalities. Besides
Uyghur
and Han nationality, a dozen brother
nationalities as Hui, Uzbek, Kirgiz,
etc.
also live
there.
In the course
of thousands years of historical development,
many ancient peoples lived there merged into
Uyghur such as ancient Sai people, Qiang people,
Lite people, Han, Yangmo, Huihu, Mongolian,
Uzbek and so on. Now, Uyghur takes two thirds of
the population in Kashi city.
For various
reasons, ancient Kashi people once believed in
Buddhism, Shamanism, Zoroastrianism, etc. After
the tenth century, Kashi as the first base of
Islamism in China began to have a dominant
position in Kashi. So far, seven nationalities
(including Uyghur) such as Uzbek, Hui, Kazak,
Tatar believe in Islamism.
Han nationality accounts for about one third of
the total population. Among them some are the
descendants of Han people migrated there after
the middle period of Qing Dynasty, while the
vast majority are soldiers, volunteers and
pioneers after the Liberation. They came from
every part of China, bringing with them their
wisdom, intelligence and customs.
Han and Uyghur are inter-influenced by each
other in their customs and traditions. The most
typical example is that Uyghur food such as Nang,
Polo, Kebob and so on have become the favorite
cuisine of Han nationality living in Kashi
today. Spring festival and Cuban Festival have
become their joint festivals.
Although other nationalities
only accounts for 1 percent of the total
population, their special customs add splendor
to Kashi.
