If you come to Xinjiang, you will meet a lot of
flower-like Uyghur girls called Guli. Why are so
many girls called Guli?
Guli means flower in Uyghur. There are Aziguli
(the flower of hope), Anarguli (pomegranate
flower), Azhatiguli (the flower of liberty)
Ruoxian Guli (bright flower), Reyihan Guli
(bloom flower), Xilinguli (dreamlike flower),
Lailiguli (snowlotus flower), Qimanguli (flower
garden), Baharguli (flower's spring), Gulixian
(flowers), Gulibostan (flower by a river), etc.
Uyghur like to call their daughters Guli because
they are flower-lovers. Where they are Uyghurs
they are flowers. These flowers are not only for
beautifying the environment but also for making
spices and wines.
Because of similarities in history, educational
level, religious belief, languages, folkways and
customs , most Kazak, Uzbek, and Kirgiz girls
are also called Guli, such as Ayiguli (moon
flower),Baktiguli (the flower of happiness),
Jieensguli (the flower of victory) in Kazak,
Gujiekguli, Hairiguli, Ruriguli, Wuriguli in
Uzbek, Amanguli, Nuerguli in Kirgiz, and
Gulipali, Gulibanu in Tatar.
